David Carson GDipBusAdmin, GDipFinPlanning, LLB, BA(juris)
David is a dual licensee specialist in financial services and consumer credit compliance.
He established Compliance One in December 2012, believing that compliance advice could be more practical and a lot more accurate. His professional career of 15 years encompasses private legal practice, retail stockbroking and financial planning advice and more than 12 years’ experience in financial services and consumer credit with a strong compliance and regulatory focus.

David started his career as a commercial litigation lawyer specialising in corporations, insolvency and trade practices matters. He then moved into financial services where he built up a successful stockbroking and financial planning practice. In 2003 David saw an opportunity to combine his legal skills and financial services knowledge and joined ASIC in the financial services enforcement team. He went on to hold numerous senior roles in financial services and consumer credit compliance including State Manager and Senior Specialist roles.

Whilst with ASIC, David drove many regulatory outcomes against licensees and representatives including licence conditions, cancellations, bannings and enforceable undertakings. He made significant contributions to national reforms including the transition of regulation of Consumer Credit to Federal Government, Super Choice, Super Switching, Statement of Advice reforms and emphasis on clear, concise and effective disclosure.

He participated in Treasury working groups for FOFA and Phase 2 credit reforms, made large contributions to ASIC's industry guidance through Regulatory Guides, Project Reports and other guidance notes and spent time as an Administrative Delegate holding hearings for licence refusals and stop orders on disclosure documents. He recruited, trained and supervised specialist teams of staff for consumer credit and financial services and designed and ran national projects including ASIC's 2006/7 Shadow Shopping project.

David's career path has given him a profound understanding of the tensions between business, law makers and regulators and he provides pragmatic solutions that address these tensions.

Amongst other qualifications, David holds a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Adelaide, a Graduate Diploma in Financial Planning from the Securities Institute of Australia and a Graduate Diploma in Business Administration from the University of Melbourne.
